Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

January 05, 2016

When winter comes and we start receiving calls about furnaces that aren't producing heat, the majority of them can be linked back to a lack of regular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace concerns are not taken care of, your system may suddenly stop operating and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a couple warning signs you can watch for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system quits working.

Furnace Age

The typical life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a safe bet to start furnace shopping now. Selecting a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make on the fly. Give yourself plenty of time to research and weigh all of your options.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get up there in years and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been properly maintained. Imagine the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that you could spend on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last few years of a furnace's life are when your system encounters the most breakdowns. Take a moment to add up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the prior two years - a new system might be a better option.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any weird noises coming from your system? Furnaces start making weird noises around the end of their life. If your furnace is switching on and off frequently or blowing cold air, it's time to consider getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home all that well. Your home can start feeling stuffy and any family members with allergies might notice more symptoms. Some other signs are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
