Three Tips to Keep Your Rockford Home Comfortable During the Winter Months

November 24, 2015

The dropping temperatures in Rockford aren’t going anywhere, and while it’s easy to daydream about the warmer temperatures, it’s critical to remember that you can continue to be just as comfortable during winter. Of course, your furnace plays a huge role in this, which is why it’s so vital to complete annual furnace service.

We do have to mention that there are only a couple things that will provide as much to your comfort this season as a well-tuned furnace. That’s why furnace service is recommended be done annually. After all, who wants to spend a cold winter not knowing if their furnace is going to keep them comfortable the entire season?

Already complete your annual furnace service? Here are a couple other tasks you can do to help keep your home comfortable:

  • Energy audit — a lot of energy companies will have an energy audit for your home so you can find areas that need improving. You might be surprised what areas are allowing hot or cold air to get out.
  • Weatherstripping — regardless of which door it is, doors offer the opportunity for a lot of cold air to come in to your home. However, when your door is shut, you could still have air making its way in your home. Check to see if your weatherstripping is in working-order or if it’s worn, torn, or damaged in any other way that could be permitting cold air inside. If you find any concerns, weatherstripping is easy to switch out and could take care of the problem.
  • Recessed lighting — one of the most common places for air leaks can be your recessed lighting. Depending on the light’s age, they may be letting all the hot air in your home get out through your ceiling. Fixing this is as easy as sealing it with caulk or aluminum tape.

These couple of tips are just a starting point, but do realize that there are other basic fixes you can do once you’ve had annual furnace service completed. Many of them can be cost-effective and easy things to accomplish on the weekend.
